Mercedes is all set to be the first to offer a hybrid with vehicle powered lithium-ion batteries. The hybrid version of the S-class sedan is set to roll out in 2009. Toyota would have been the first to offer similar hybrid vehicles but postponed the launch to 2010 due to safety concerns.
French battery maker, Johnson Controls-Saft will be supply the batteries that were approved after they were subjected to rigorous testing. Mercedes executives say, the 2009 S400 will have a mild hybrid powertrain with an electric motor that also acts as a starter-generator and will be able to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 7.3 seconds. The auto maker claims that the S400 will be the most fuel-efficient luxury sedan in the world.
There have been several incidents of gadgets using litium ion batteries bursting into flames as the batteries have a tendency to overheat and catch fire. Safety is the major concern here and if all goes well, we may see cheaper and affordable hybrids in the future.
