Citrix debuts energy efficient PowerSmarts

Essentialities are not always essential. So why waste essentialities when not essential? Doesn’t it make better sense to save the essentialities to be available when it is essential? My idea here is not to play with words. The reason why I’m generalizing is that, it holds good not only for what is to follow but for any aspect.

Citrix has been one such company to be enlightened with the importance of saving energy, with respect to electricity consumed by computer servers. Its during peak hours that the companies want their servers to be fully charged for their system delivery to function at high speeds. This is enabled by utilizing large amounts of energy. Logically speaking, during non-peak hours, feeding in so many watts of energy is pretty much a waste.

In order to cut down the energy consumption during non-peak hours, Citrix today announced a new PowerSmarts feature for its Citrix Presentation Server line, which allows the adimin’s set policy to automatically dial server power down based on application traffic levels. The company claims the feature can help customers’ datacenter energy consumption costs by up to 50%. Now, that would be a lot of power saving.

“The key to any effective response to green IT challenges is to be able to maintain, and even increase, the capacity of IT infrastructure while reducing its energy consumption,” said Scott Herren, Citrix group vice president and general manager of the Citrix Application Virtualization Group. “By powering down unused Presentation Servers during off-peak usage, we are helping our customers be more green and at the same time putting money right back into their wallets.”

Leading computer manufacturer, HP being the first one to support Citrix by installing the PowerSmart feature in its HP ProLiant portfolio, there is no doubt it would soon hit all the MNCs. PowerSmart is compatible with all current versions and editions of Citrix Presentation Server and iLO-enabled HP servers. It will be available in December to all Citrix Presentation Server customers as a free download at Critix home page.
