It may seem to be weird, but a day might come when your packaged drinking water is recycled urine. If NASA is successful in its tests, you may end up drinking recycled urine. The recycling of urine to drinking water is part of a larger project for space exploration. NASA has been faced by challenges related to condensed water for space exploration expeditions that last for more than a few weeks. The scientists at NASA have been researching on ways to recycle human liquid waste such as urine and sweat to condensed drinking water. If the tests are successful, the space exploration satellites will have to carry less drinking water.
This project for recycling urine into drinking water has been named Regenerative Environmental Control and Life Support System or ECLSS. Although, this is still in the testing phase, these experiments will be helpful in the future when the whole of earth’s water is contaminated or when humans go on long space exploration expeditions. It is to be noted that shipping water on space satellites is much more costly than the recycling process.
This is a step towards the future and time may come when we are forced to recycle all the water we excrete.
