Produce hydrogen gas by electrolyzing any biodegradable organic material

new microbial electrolysis cell technology bottom

Be it to fuel manufacturing units or cars, demand for ‘hydrogen’ as an alternative clean fuel is increasing in leaps and bound becoming a mainstream renewable fuel. And, industries are resorting to various sources of the fuel they can lay hands on.

Although bacteria is no more a new source of renewable fuel, it is recently, researchers have come up with yet another way of extracting hydrogen from bacteria – a unique one.

To create small quantities of hydrogen gas, the researchers have harvested protons and electrons from bacteria inside a reactor! Study author Bruce Logan of Pennsylvania State University said,

Hydrogen is an excellent transportation fuel, but you’ve got to make it in a sustainable way. We think this is the key method to do that.

The process, thus, in itself is a breakthrough in the production of the ‘clean-burning’ fuel by using any biodegradable organic material. Now, the production of hydrogen gas will no longer depend only on nonrenewable energy sources or natural gas. Thanks to the new hydrogen production method.
