Organic LEDs to pave a bright clean way into the future

We already talked about LECs and how they are about to change the future of lighting world and that seems like only yesterday! Oh right, I have taken a long weekend vacation and have been away from my system for a good 5 days, so yes it seems like only yesterday even though it was good one week back. Efficient and dazzling lighting has always been a problem to create. Modern CFLs are indeed a lot more efficient that your good old neon tubes, but they still come at a certain price. That price is in regards to both your wallet and the planet. But Organic LEDs promise to change all that and they promise it will happen very soon.

In late 2005, Osram was announcing a breakthrough in polymer-OLED technology by achieving a record 25 lumens-per-watt (lm/W) of device efficiency. Now, they are announcing that they manufactured warm white Organic-LEDs with an efficiency of 46 lm/W and a life of more than 5000 hours at a brightness of 1000 cd/m2. That’s close to the efficiency of fluorescent lamps, and more than twice that of incandescent lamps. This obviously means that we have taken a huge step forward in making sure that we follow the green path to the future behind a guiding clean light.

The problem with all this though is that it will still take a considerable amount of time for this technology to come to the common man and his not so fancy home. We also do not know what is the exact initial price, which one would have to pay for this technology. The world is only now, slowly warming up to CFL technology and it is taking considerable amount of time and advertising to get it over. Now making the all new Organic-LEDs acceptable would not be an easy task either.
