Amps are notorious for power hogging, taking as much as 50-60 watts even on standby, which make them terrible when it comes to energy efficiency. However, this may be a thing of the past thanks to Knoll Systems‘ new GSZ44 controller/amp. Known for making energy efficient Eco-System multi-room amplifiers, Knoll’s GSZ44 controller/amp is the first amp of its kind to receive an Energy Star rating, so you know this isn’t all just hype. And there’s plenty of evidence to back up this claim as well.
The GSZ44 is fairly similar to its larger counterpart GSZ67 seven-source, six-zone amp as far as looks go. It’s an 8-channel class A/B amplifier that produces 30 watts per channel at 8 ohms and 35 watts per channel at 4. The real kicker is the fact that the amp uses less than 1 watt while on standby and less than 2 watts while idling. Compare that with ordinary amps and you’ll see the difference that makes. What helps it do this is the built-in Eco-System circuit, which shuts off unused channels. It can then turn these channels back on again within an 8 millisecond timeframe; fast enough to stop any annoying clicks and thumps generated by repeatedly powering and un-powering a channel. The package comes with four keypads, a controller amplifier and is also expandable by daisy-chaining two or more together to make larger systems. The entire set is priced at $999; a bit high perhaps, but remember, it’s not going to add to your electricity bill. Here’s hoping we see more products like this in the future.
