Eco Factor: California’s 845,000 solar homes could get solar electricity soon.
Utility Southern California Edison has announced a massive deal with BrightSource Energy, which could result in green electricity for 845,000 homes in California. The energy will be generated by BrightSource Energy’s solar tower technology and 1300MW would be sold to the utility. The official price to be spent has not yet been announced but the mega deal would surely be one of the biggest contracts ever signed in the United States.
BrightSource Energy’s solar tower technology uses mirrors to concentrate sunlight onto an area filled with a liquid to convert it into steam. This steam is then fed into a conventional electricity generating turbine. The technology is one of the most efficient ways to generate green electricity.
The Dark Side:
The electricity generated by BrightSource Energy’s solar tower will not come cheap, and eventually that extra cost would be added to electricity bills of California’s residents.
