Eco Tech: Shooting rubbish at 50mph for a cleaner residential development

Eco Factor: Hi-Tech waste disposal system shoots rubbish at 50MPH for collection at a remote location.

Recycling has always been a tedious job that not many would enjoy. Separating waste manually with your nose clipped together in between your fingers and carrying it to the municipal trucks for disposal, all for the sake of the environment, doesn’t seem to be a long lasting solution. Like always, technology has come to the aid, at least for some residents at a new housing development in London.

The residents of this development have three small recycling bins built into their kitchen cupboards. Residents just have to use the correct bin for the correct product and empty it into chutes at the base of the building and that’s it. The other dirty part of the whole process is handled by technology. Whenever these chutes are full, they open their doors, throwing the waste into a tunnel below. The Envac system, as the system has been named, then uses giant fans to create a vacuum effect, accelerating trash to speeds in excess of 50MPH through the tunnel.

The tunnel takes the waste to a central collection building, which could be up to a kilometer away from the main building, then takes care of the recycling process. Currently 286 apartments in one block use this system. If trials are fruitful, similar systems can be installed to all 10,000 apartment blocks of with a complex structure of tunnels in place.

The Dark Side:

Building tunnels for 10,000 apartment blocks will not be much different than building an underground subway system, which in this case will be for trash.
