Eco Factor: Hi-tech SPD Smart Glass maximizes efficient use of daylight.
Innovative Glass Corp. has announced the world’s first installation of SPD (Suspended Particle Device) Smart Glass windows at the Indiana University Health Information and Translational Sciences Building. The technology has been developed by Hitachi Chemical Co. Ltd and marks the advent of the newest means of energy efficiency.
The glass comes with an engineered film which allows it to have its tint level and light transmission characteristics infinitely adjusted from 1% to 50% with the help of a simple switch. Apart from increasing daylight efficiency in a building, the glass also promises to block 99% of harmful UV rays entering the building. The glass is so efficient that a simple switch will turn it dark within seconds, eliminating the need for mechanical blinds and expensive sun curtains.
The Dark Side:
The Smart Glass will undoubtedly be a hit in conference rooms and boardrooms, where devices such as projectors are to be installed. However, encouraging homeowners to spend extra for the Smart Glass won’t be an easy task.
