Eco Factor: Streetlights that turn on with a cellphone command.
The need to conserve energy has always been backed up technological innovations that take us to a newer world where technology and the environment benefit each other. However, this race to develop eco-conscious concepts has often given rise to bizarre technologies that would take human patience to a whole new level. A similar concept is being tested in Germany in the name of energy-saving streetlights.
Dial4Light, as the system is being referred to, is installed on lighting grids. Local residents can use their cellphones to selectively turn on the lights on any street they are walking on. Once turned on, the lights go off by themselves after a fixed time interval of 15 minutes. It is being claimed that the implementation of this system has resulted in 25% energy savings.
The Dark Side:
The system seems good for a day or two, but using the system on a daily basis will be a hassle. A better and cost-effective way to save energy would simply be motion sensors. Though the sensors will glow only when you pass the first streetlight of the block, you will definitely be saved from calling a dumb streetlight every night.
