Eco Factor: Portable, non-electric water purification device.
We have seen some really ingenious low-tech water purification systems in the past, but none of them are practical enough to be used to provide relief after natural disasters like floods and tsunamis. Apart from the precious lives that are lost in the first few hours in case of a flood, many more people die due to the outbreak of epidemics, which in most cases are related to lack of clean water.

Product designer Ceren Bagatar has designed a water purification system that suits the needs of those living in flood-hit areas. This emergency flood-rescue drinking water contraption relies on RO (Reverse Osmosis) for purifying water. Essentially the system is made of four main components – a reverse osmosis membrane, a container holding concentrated dioralyte solution, another container to hold the nutrient-enriched potable water and a mouthpiece for multi-user usage.

The system works by first purifying water with the reverse osmosis system it’s equipped with. Concentrated dioralyte is then mixed with this potable water to enrich it with nutrients. The designer states that a container full of concentrated dioralyte can be used 15 times to enrich about 500ml of water each time; afterwards the container can either be refilled or replaced with a new one. This purified and enriched water is then stored in a container until it’s used.
