Eco Cars: School kids develop solar human hybrid vehicle for Maker Faire

Eco Factor: Pedal powered vehicle assisted by solar energy.

Launched as an 8th grade project for Novato Charter School, the SOHH project was showcased at the Maker Faire. The Solar Human Hybrid Project (SOHH) is not one of those solar-powered beauties that you’ll see on the streets in a couple of decades but is actually a really practical way to take your family out for a ride in the evening.

Using pedals as the main power source, the vehicle is assisted by solar panels mounted on top of the vehicle. The SOHH vehicle is designed to seat four people, a dog and some cargo and is equipped with a 1HP electric motor and a pair of sodium silicate batteries that collectively allow the vehicle to run at about 18mph.
