Eco Factor: German brewery generates energy from waste grain.
While brewing isn’t in itself a green process, considering the energy intensive processes that are used, a German scientist feels that he might have developed what the brewing industry is in need of since long. The team of scientists has designed a system to recycle spent grains and wastewater to produce energy that can fuel the process and reduce energy consumption by as much as 50%.
Breweries have been battling with ways to dispose of spent grain, for which they actually have to pay recyclers. This new system can not only eliminate the need to spend on waste disposal, but can also help the brewery save a lot in energy costs. The test plant enables breweries to generate energy from their waste stream in a way that meets European environmental standards.
