Eco Factor: Low-cost plastic stick-on solar cells for portable electronic devices and cars.

Researchers at the University of Queensland have developed stick-on solar cells made from molded plastics, which according to the researchers can revolutionize solar energy generation and can be used to power everything from tiny electronic devices to your homes.

The cells can be installed on the cases of mobile devices or on windows or the roof of a house to provide ample energy to power any system. The cells can produce energy at a cost of around $1 per watt, which might sound expensive but is actually around one eights of the cost of electricity generated by a conventional silicon solar cell.

These researchers believe that the technology is ready for production and cells should be available in the next two years for which they have also been awarded a $1.9 million grant to further develop the technology for the market.
