Eco Factor: Walking robots powered by energy-efficient systems.

Boston Dynamics has been awarded a $32 million contract by DARPA to develop walking robots to serve as robotic mules to aid in combat operations by carrying supplies over rough terrain. Dubbed the LS3, the robots will be able to carry about 400 pounds of gear and may be powered by a fuel-efficient internal combustion engine, though hybrid electric power may also be in the mix.

The LS3 will also serve as a mobile auxiliary power generator to recharge batteries on the field, which would reduce the energy required to transport conventional field generators. Moreover, TARDEC is also developing a hybrid electric power station that can switch between fossil fuel, sun and wind, which might be integrated in this new class of robots.
