Eco Factor: Prototype low-emission car powered by coffee granules.

While the auto world seems dominated by cars running on alternative sources of fuel, predominantly electricity, there are a few who believe that apart from gasoline and biofuel, coffee too is a good fuel. A team from the BBC1 science program “Bang Goes the Theory” has developed a prototype vehicle based on a 1998 Volkswagen Scirocco that runs on coffee granules.

Considering that the cost of coffee is well above gasoline, the running cost of the vehicle is expected to be up to 50 times more than the cost of running it on gasoline. The unique vehicle will be displayed at the Big Bang Science Fair, before it sets out for a 210-mile run between Manchester and London.

The car’s coffee tank needs to be replenished with granules every 30 to 45 miles, as the car is expected to run three miles on a kilo of fuel or about 56 espressos per mile. The designers state that the car does emit carbon, but it is considerably less than a vehicle running on gasoline.
