Eco Factor: Fuel-efficient vehicle designed for Shell European Eco-Marathon.
Carrying about 250ml of 95 octane fuel in a small plastic container, this eco car has been designed to compete in the upcoming Shell European Eco-Marathon. Designed by students at the Coventry University, this vehicle will be competing against 200 other entrants from 24 countries, one of which will become the world’s most fuel efficient car.
The bodywork is fashioned from plastic sheeting and it’s strapped on with nothing more complex than nylon ties and some gaffer tape. Every spare ounce has been trimmed from the bulk to an extend that even the cogs which turn the plastic drive-belt are lightened, driller and polished.
With an aerodynamic seating position and a slim driver, the team believes that about a coke can worth of fuel will be enough to take this car from London to Brighton. The vehicle will be driven using the burn and coast method, which involves accelerating to a top speed of 20mph, cutting the engine until the speed drops of half and then repeating the process.
