Eco Factor: Soccer field made from 346,000 pounds of crumb rubber made from tires.
South Africa is all over the news and do I even need to mention why. But, this time around it’s Vancouver giving a little twist to the soccer tale. The beautiful nation is creating headlines for the installation of a sports field in Vancouver’s Empire Field Stadium that used 346,000 pounds of crumb rubber made from tires.
Liberty Tire Recycling recycled 22,450 scrap tires that helped British Columbia getting its largest installation of crumb rubber. The recycled rubber behaves as an additive to soil, improving drainage and providing a level of cushioning that can help prevent athlete injuries. It will also save on water and spraying of pesticides, as the field uses artificial material.
Both a Canadian Football League team and the city’s new Major League Soccer team will be seen playing in the field in 2011. The Empire Field Stadium that was constructed in mere 111 days will be dismantled and converted to a community playing field so Vancouver soccer players can play on the recycled rubber field without an MLS contract.
