Eco Factor: One of the world’s largest wind farms to generate 420MW power.
AGL Energy Limited and Meridian Energy have signed an agreement to develop a 420MW wind farm at Macarthur in Victoria. The wind farm is expected to be completed by 2013 for a cost of nearly $1 billion. Once completed, the facility will be the largest in the southern hemisphere and one of the largest in the world.
Using 140 three-megawatt wind turbines to generate 420MW of renewable electric power, the wind farm will be able to power over 220,000 average Victorian homes. The plan will also save 1.7 million tons of greenhouse gases from being emitted into the atmosphere each year. AGL and Meridian will each fund 50 percent of the capital cost of constructing the wind farm.
