Eco Factor: Solar power plants to generate 1.25GW of renewable electric power.
Constructing large-scale solar power plants in the deserts makes sense due to the number of sunny days in these arid areas. Recognizing the true potential of solar power in the Californian desert, the US Bureau of Land Management has issued a final environmental impact statement for the 1000MW Blythe Solar Power Project and the 250MW Beacon Solar Energy Project.
The 250MW solar project will be built by NextEra Energy Resources and will be constructed on 2000 acres of land. The solar thermal power plant will use parabolic troughs to concentrate sunlight to generate renewable electricity. The company expects that the plant will come online in the next three years.
The 1000MW power project will be developed by Solar Millennium Inc. and will require 7025 acres of land. The energy generated by the plant will be enough to power 800,000 homes. The $6 billion plant will take six years to complete.
