Eco Factor: Zero-emission car powered by electricity.
Smart Car USA has unveiled a new all-electric version of its uber-compact Smart Car in Ridgefield. Only 250 units of the car will be produced for now and Fairfield County will be one of the five places in the country where the vehicle will be available.
Christened the Electric Drive, the zero-emission vehicle carries a battery bank under the cargo space in the trunk and the fuel tank has been replaced by the car’s charging system. The onboard battery pack provides a range of about 83 miles and can be charged using a 110V or a 220V outlet.
Fifty cars will be made available for lease for $599 a month up to four years and the other 200 units will be available in Portland, Oregon, San Francisco and Tampa. The creators claim that the compact electric vehicle is extremely safe, as it’s built in an ellipsoid shape, which is one of the strongest shapes known to man. Moreover, the driver is sandwiched between two layers of micro-alloy high strength steel.
