Floating eco-house to help vacationers withstand rough weather

1 1

The Romanian Naval Authority took the opportunity to create the floating house aka Pontoon Bedroom. They got their inspiration from a vacation house that was located in the Danube Delta, residing closer to water, and carrying the advantage of being mobile. Due to this advantage of mobility, it can be shifted to different locations depending upon the season and needs of tourists.

It is basically a vacation house for people who want to live with nature. The house has separate rooms for seven people. It can also be anchored to the shore with a secondary structure, i.e. a trailer boat. It does not need any crew or any shipping arrangements. The mobile house can navigate through rivers and inland waters and drag itself to any landing place.

The house utilized reinforced concrete during its construction to ensure impermeability. A small model was made from this material and was kept floating on water for two weeks. This is how the material for the construction passed the test of ‘impermeability’. The reinforced concrete floater had the following advantages:

• No maintenance costs
• Stability at much higher weight, even under the influence of waves and wind pressure
• Ability to check the inside of the float and react immediately in case of any problem

The floating house consists of two floors (ground and first floor). The chassis of the building is made up of zinc-coated metal, which is lightweight and consists of sandwich paneled roof. The construction began in September 2009 and the location chosen was along the Danube Delta river, arm of St. George, in Victoria City from Tulcea country.

The house has been designed in accordance with the strength, stability and safety rules for vessels. It has different technical solutions for common utilities like water, sewerage, electricity, heat, etc. A safe distance is maintained while anchoring the building on shore to avoid submergence. The floating house is totally protected from the effects of a possible earthquake.

Various security measures were taken for the floating house:
• Two bridges constructed from the reinforced concrete with elastic distancing elements behave as a dam for protection
• The concrete floater has six partitions and therefore, if one of them is flooded, the other five will provide buoyancy.
• These six partitions also contain pumps to get rid of water in case of percolation.
• The house stays anchored to the shore and in case of movements the people are not allowed to board in the house.

Extremely economical LED lamps provide lightning that are powered by 12 V batteries. The batteries are loaded by wind turbines and solar panels. There is also a heat engine generator for powering the batteries if they do not get enough power. Solar panels and instant gas also provide hot water.
