It is a carnival carousel from 1926 exhibited at the annual South by Southwest (SXSW) Interactive conference, but this venerable contraption is reputedly powered by General Electric’s advanced ecomagination technology. The precious power is conveyed from the GE’s innovative thin film panels, which utilize a cadmium telluride semiconductor to capture the solar energy.

As already mentioned in one of our previous articles, thin film solar panels are paving the future for low cost solar energy generation. And this is where this unique technology is fervently banking on. GE has already started its work on thin film panels, in collaboration with PrimeStar Solar Inc., and one day hopes to integrate such solar panels by simply wrapping them around objects or even using them as sails! Moreover among the current Photo-voltaic technologies, thin film solar panels leave the lowest carbon footprint, and have the fastest energy yield time when measured in life cycle basis.
