5 minutes of charging for 500 miles!

A revolution in the making. That’s what the electric car makers are calling this new invention.

A design, being developed by a small start up company in Austin, Texas, is using a technology to replace the electrochemical batteries.

The technology called Electrical-energy-storage unit (EESU) utilizing ceramic and integrated-circuit technologies for replacement of electrochemical batteries aims at removing the internal combustion engines in the electric cars.

Instead it would use an ultracapacitor that would provide the car with the required power. A five minute plug in would generate enough power to drive 500 miles non stop without any dependency on any other fuel.

Up till now electric cars required overnight charging for 50 miles of gas free commute. The engine, a hybrid of combustion engine, relied heavily on fuel for extra power. Researchers have never negated the dependence of electric cars on fossil fuels, even in the future.

A lot of uproar is being caused by the chemical researchers and critics as they are unsure about the powers of this technology.

But Toronto based ZENN Motor Co., which has licensed EEStor’s invention, call it a ‘game changer’ and has already invested $3.8 million and another $ 1.2 million if the ultracapacitor meets third party testing. It has plans to integrate the technology in the company’s low-speed, short-range electric cars.

Given EEStors‘ experience and name, it would never invest in a plan that is headed no where. But the chemical researchers are not very hopeful about the technology as the risks involved are high. They believe that the best strategy at this point is to wait and watch until the final product is made.
