A new fuel cell boiler has been developed by British Gas that could end up turning homes across the UK into mini-power stations. About 30 households will participate in a trial of the technology, which uses a combination of heat and power to generate electricity and simultaneously heat a home using natural gas. Instead of burning gas like a condensing boiler, this new machine passes gas through a fuel cell in a chemical process that creates heat and electricity simultaneously.
In other words, it turns your home into a micro generator of electricity. Now this is not exactly what one envisioned for fuel cell technology, but this is more of a stop-gap solution to the energy problem. The technology is still dependent on fossil fuel, but will reduce the greenhouse gases emitted from the conventional process of burning fossil fuels. The new gadget will be priced between $5000 and $6000 and the consumer will get his money back in space of 5 years. Again, this seems only a temporary arrangement and Fuel Cells surely have a lot more potential than this.
