1996 Corvette successfully converted into low emission, all-electric 2011 avatar

Electric Corvette

In the recent times with the allure of various DIY projects in the automotive sector, we have seen some car concepts that are envisaged as a green revamp of an existing (and sometimes venerable) model. The trend is certainly propitious from the perspective of sustainability, and this time moving along the progression is something which is much more than some highfalutin concept. Wayne Bickley from California has managed to convert his originally gas guzzling 1996 Corvette into a fully working all-electric, low emission albeit classy automobile.

This black beauty came with a high-performance LT4 V8 engine, to herald the introduction of the Grand Sport (GS) version in 1996. But the owner was apparently bit by a ‘green’ bug, as he swapped the paraphernalia of internal combustion with a set of 18 XS Power XP1000 batteries, a DC electric motor, and an innovative system of clutch-less six-speed transmission. The final outcome was that of a snazzy sports Corvette infused with dollops of sustainability.

According to Bickley, this all-electric contraption has a substantial range of 20 miles (32 km) with a convenient top speed of 85 mph. Well, that certainly makes it worth for a low emission romp around the tight city blocks. And do check out the videos for further illustration and idea of the one and only electric Corvette.
