solar cup boats 2006 9The May’s fifth annual “Solar Cup” competition will roll out solar-powered boats to be build by 1,000 high school students from throughout Southern California. Sponsored by the Metropolitan Water District and its member public water agencies, the students from a record 46 high schools have signed up for the ‘2007 Solar Cup program’. This makes it the nation’s largest solar boat competition, if not the world! — The MWD informed.

The teams will be building the boats with tool chests and kits of pre-cut marine-grade plywood
, which are provided by the Metropolitan Water District. For this, they have gathered at the Claremont headquarters of Three Valleys Municipal Water District.

The eco-friendly boat will be equipped with solar panels, motors, batteries and steering systems. And for this, the MWD’s member public water agencies, area retail water agencies and government agencies will provide each team with $3,000.
