‘Doomsday Seed Vault’ gets 100 million seeds

arctic seed vault opens doors for 100 million seed

To protect the crop diversity against global catastrophe the Doomsday Seed Vault in a remote Arctic region has now received inaugural shipments of 100 million seeds that originated in over 100 countries. The deposits range from unique varieties of major African and Asian food staples such as maize, rice, wheat, cowpea, and some European and South American varieties of eggplant, lettuce, etc.

The vault is built near the village of Longyearbyen on the island of Spitsbergen and contains 268,000 distinct samples of seeds each originating in a different part of the planet. The vault ensures the possibility of restarting agricultural production at regional or global level in the event of a natural or a man-made disaster. The vault has been designed in a way that it will protect the seeds even in worst-case scenarios of global warming as the vault rooms will remain frozen for another 200 years.
